The May Department Stores Co. (St. Louis) has announced the promotion of Jeffrey Kantor to president and ceo of its Hecht’s/Strawbridge’s division (Washington, D.C.).

Effective Nov. 1, 2004, Kantor succeeds Frank Guzzetta, who — as previously announced — will become president and ceo of May’s new Marshall Field’s division, effective Jan. 1, 2005. John Harper continues as chairman of Hecht’s/Strawbridge’s.

Kantor joined May in 1981 as an assistant buyer for the Boston-based Filene’s division. He has held numerous positions, becoming division vp, men’s furnishings and clothing, in 1992; vp, assistant to the president, in 1995; and senior vp, general merchandise manager, in 1997 for men’s, young men’s and boys. Earlier this year, Kantor began overseeing cosmetics, accessories, dresses, suits, intimate apparel and hosiery at the Filene’s/Kaufmann’s division.
