CONCEPT: AN UPDATED design to engage shoppers is a highlight of this local Long Island, N.Y., nursery brand dating back to 1853.

  1. PAVE THE WAY
The light paver floor helps call attention to wood shelving and display tables throughout both the main retail and greenhouse areas. “Warm, but also inviting,” says Maxwell Miller, Manager of Marketing and Brand Strategy, Chute Gerdeman (Westerville, Ohio), the firm behind the store’s design. “Materiality can elevate and complement the plants and the merchandise.”
  2. LET THE Light IN
New circular light pendants complement products by providing soft, ambient light, evenly illuminating merchandise on the tables beneath. With 4000K color temperature and dimmable remote power, these lights work seamlessly with the natural sunlight, maintaining a consistent look.
  3. FAR AND WIDE
With a total 72,000 square feet, a key component in the store’s updated design was widening the layout to help guests maneuver efficiently, highlight key areas and relieve cart congestion on high-traffic days or during peak seasons. This allows shoppers to “enjoy the store with leisure,” says Miller.
  4. brighten up
By utilizing sunlight as a light source – primarily in the greenhouse area (not shown) – plants and merchandise pop, looking “sharp, exciting, fresh and invigorating,” explains Miller.
  5. INVIGORATING REFRESH
A new merchandising system brings more accessibility and functionality to the space for both customers and staff. Custom tables and displays were designed to inspire guests and better communicate information about products while keeping operations like watering plants and restocking merchandise easy.
