Shaw's Supermarkets Inc. (West Bridgewater, Mass.) has opened the doors at its newest store in the historic Berger Building in Dorchester, Mass. The building is part of the Baker Chocolate Historic District, which housed the first chocolate factory in the U.S. and one of the first refrigerated warehouses. Shaw's Supermarket and a parking area for 200 cars is located in the former refrigerated warehouse.

“This new store, in such an ethnically and culturally diverse community, represents the type of progress that can be attained when companies, public officials, communities and neighborhood groups work together toward a common goal,” says Paul Gannon, Shaw's president and ceo. “I am proud that we are providing the residents with a greatly enhanced shopping experience in a truly special and unique setting.”

The 44,000-square-foot store features a seafood counter, in-store bakery, service deli, LaCarte prepared foods department and Wild Harvest natural foods specialty shop. It also utilizes several energy conservation initiatives, such as heat reclamation for space and water heating, frozen food cases with self-closing doors and metal halide lighting for efficiency.

Parent company J Sainsbury plc operates 190 Shaw's and Star Market locations in six New England states.
