How Coffee is Redefining Store Experience in India

Though India may be a tea-loving nation at heart, it’s coffee that’s stirring up a revolution in retail.

COFFEE IN INDIA HAS had an exciting and evolving journey. Beginning with the humble, steaming cup of traditional filter coffee, whose unmistakable aroma filled homes across South India, to the early 2000s when coffee transformed into a cultural symbol for young urban India, and global and homegrown café chains introduced specialty brews and trendy hangout spaces, turning cafés into social hubs for a new generation of coffee lovers. Today, coffee has entered a new wave, where experiential and artisanal coffee culture thrives in boutique café settings, offering curated brews and immersive experiences for a more discerning audience.

The newest chapter in India’s coffee story is its integration into the retail shopping experience, bringing with it a sense of comfort, warmth and indulgence. From compact coffee bars and cozy nooks to plush in-store cafés, brands and retailers across the country are brewing a new kind of retail, one where a cup of specialty coffee transforms shopping into a lingering, immersive and more human experience.

What probably began as something to tantalize the well-heeled customer in luxury brand stores or at designer boutiques has become more democratic, and it’s now seen in emerging brand flagship outlets, the big box home improvement stores and now even sneaker outlets. The warm and comforting cup of coffee is transforming shopping into a more enjoyable experience rather than just a transactional activity.

A Moment of Pause

The coffee and shopping combination becomes even more compelling as store sizes increase. The home improvement category, which was once dominated by smaller, specialized markets has now evolved with the rise of large-format big-box stores that provide the convenience of multiple product categories under one roof, offering a seamless shopping experience, especially for new homeowners.

Recently, Hyderabad witnessed the launch of Unispace by Aparna Enterprises Ltd. (AEL), one of Asia’s largest experiential destinations for home design and building solutions. Spanning 105,000 square feet, the space brings together more than 20 product categories and solutions, creating a true one-stop platform for both B2B and B2C customers, representing a significant shift in how Indians design, build and renovate their homes.

Understanding the challenges customers face when navigating multiple sections, long dwell time and making significant home-buying decisions, Unispace partnered with popular homegrown coffee brand Hatti Kaapi to create an exclusive in-store café. The thoughtfully designed and welcoming sit-down cafe serves the brand’s most-loved authentic Indian coffee brews such as the South Indian filter coffee and Indiano — a signature blend from the lush plantations of Chikmagalur in Karnataka accompanied by small bites, providing couples and families a comfortable environment to pause, reflect, discuss their choices and unwind over a cup of coffee.

Unhurried Shopping

After decades of rapid retail transformation, from traditional bazaars to malls, branded outlets, online shopping, and now quick commerce battling for the 10-minute delivery race, the retail landscape has evolved at lightning speed in India.

In the rush to mirror global standards, retailers often overlooked a uniquely Indian preference for hospitality and a leisurely shopping experience that once defined traditional market culture. Today, brands are reintroducing that sense of indulgence through in-store cafés.

The Bear House, a relevantly new entrant in the menswear segment in India, opened its 3000-square-foot flagship outlet in Bangalore and decided to integrate The Bear Cafe, serving artisanal bakes and freshly brewed coffee. According to the brand, the cafe allows those accompanying male shoppers to relax. It doubles as a place for customers to linger and enjoy their shopping experience. This conscious effort was part of the brand’s intent to create a space that feels relaxed, unhurried and experiential — not pushy.

As for New Delhi-based new-age sneaker design house GullyLabs, their newly opened flagship store is a hub for product discovery, community engagement and experiential retail. The store includes custom services and experiences including a sneaker customization zone and shoe-making museum, along with a coffee nook by Subko Coffee, a progressive homegrown coffee brand. According to the brand, the coffee counter was placed strategically near the customization zone, where they wanted customers to slow down and savor the process of sneakers being brought to life by hand.

Come for Coffee, Stay to Shop

Two brands, two offerings, one experience. That was the idea behind the Wrogn X Milano Bakery Café in Bangalore, a unique retail concept that blends the best of fashion and café culture under one roof. Customers can move seamlessly from Wrogn’s signature retail environment, defined by bold and playful design elements, into the inviting Milano café space. The two zones are visually unified through seamless grey walls, ceilings and common flooring, with the only distinction being softer, warmer lighting in the café area to create a relaxed ambience. The brand believes that accessible entry points, such as a cup of coffee, draw people in and ultimately encourage them to explore the store.

Meanwhile, Cafe Dori, which is tucked away inside the flagship store of renowned leather goods brand Nappa Dori in Hyderabad, is a serene retreat for anyone seeking a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. This quaint and stylish Pan-European café reflects the brand’s distinctive design language. From specialty drinks like Mocha, Pumpkin Spiced Latte, Iced Vietnamese Coffee to all-day breakfast plates, many customers step in for the café, only to find themselves exploring the store afterward. With the brand’s intent to take retail into a new direction, Cafe Dori is housed within the brand’s other outlets in Delhi, Gurgaon and Chandigarh too.

Today, retail isn’t just about selling, it’s about connecting and welcoming customers. Offer them a place to sit, a beverage to enjoy, and a moment that makes them feel valued. They’ve chosen your store over others, hence it’s important to make the choice feel worthwhile.
