THE NUMBERS

New York’s Meatpacking District is a compact, industrial borough on the West Side of Manhattan. As the name suggests, this area was once home to slaughterhouses, packing plants and various other manufacturing facilities. The completion of The High Line in the mid-1800s (now a public park) sparked further development. Present day, the neighborhood is home to around 5000 residents and has established itself as New York’s “most fashionable neighborhood,” according to New York Magazine.

Leica recently opened its doors in New York’s Meatpacking District.

THE PULSE

The district’s variety of restaurants, shopping, nightlife and hotels makes it a one-stop shop for tourists and locals alike. Through modern development, the area has “a perfect balance between public spaces, restaurants, museums and experiential environments,” says Reginald Rogers, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Communication Design Foundation and Spatial Experience Design at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York. Connecting the West Side is The High Line – a former railway that’s now a nearly mile-and-a-half elevated walking space – originating in the Meatpacking District. It connects other boroughs and neighborhoods, like Chelsea, Hudson Yards and Hell’s Kitchen.

THE HOT SPOTS

The Meatpacking District features iconic luxury brands like Gucci, Christian Louboutin, Hermès, Diane von Furstenberg and Rolex. Other retailers like Lululemon, Sephora, Alice + Olivia, Google, All Saints and Rag & Bone have also made a home within the neighborhood’s nine square blocks. The Whitney Museum of American Art is also a resident with galleries showcasing contemporary American artwork.

A newcomer to the area is camera retailer Leica. Housed in a Greek revival rowhouse built in the 19th century, the building’s historic aesthetic, including the interior brick and wooden rafters, was incorporated into the retail space’s final design. Showcasing cameras with brightly lit finishes, casework and FF&E, the space also includes a photography gallery.

Ultimately, the flagship celebrates “the Meatpacking District’s historic setting while introducing contemporary elements that represented the brand and provided a high-end space for Leica to connect with its audience through a multifunctional retail environment,” says Marta Abas, Senior Project Designer, MG2 (Seattle).

OBSTACLES AND OPPORTUNITIES

The Meatpacking District was added to the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places in 2007, and with expansion and gentrification during the early 2000s came high competition for space and increasing rent prices. With varying store sizes and locations, some rent prices in the district start around $16,000+ per month. The area’s compact size has historically caused logistical and traffic concerns, though proposed initiatives aim to make the area more pedestrian-friendly with bike lanes and open plazas, according to the New York City Meatpacking District Management Association.
