James Colburn

WHY JAMES?

From project concept to installation, James works to design retail spaces operated by Harding aboard a variety of global cruise ships from lines like Cunard to Seabourn to Virgin Voyages to P&O Cruises. Pushing the boundaries of traditional cruise retail, James aims to put the customer experience at the heart of his designs and often creates spaces that foster interactivity and engagement. Some of his standout projects include a jewelry customization bar and interactive whisky wall aboard the P&O Iona. He’s also designed the stores aboard Virgin Voyages’ second cruise ship, Valiant Lady, set to launch spring 2022.

What’s the biggest challenge you face professionally?

Unlike land-based retail, cruise ship logistics can be particularly difficult. We have a very short window for installations and the ship’s location can change at a moment’s notice. There are always surprises when building a floating shop!

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The opportunity to work with a diverse portfolio of brands and designing exciting new shopping experiences.

…Going to Bristol harborside and enjoying some drinks with my friends.
