Meijer to Open Neighborhood Market in Cleveland

Grocer’s fifth small-format store the first outside of Michigan

Meijer (Grand Rapids, Mich.) said it will open one of its neighborhood-oriented grocery markets on Cleveland’s east side on Jan. 16. The 40,000-square-foot store, dubbed the Fairfax Market for its surrounding neighborhood, is part of a mixed-use neighborhood revitalization project being developed by the City of Cleveland, Cleveland Clinic, the Fairfax Renaissance Development Corp. and Fairmount Properties.

“Fairfax Market is committed to being more than just a new store,” said Fairfax Market Store Director Alan Jordan. “We will be an involved partner, investing in the community and supporting local businesses. We look forward to providing convenient access to fresh, quality food and other necessities at good prices, and we can’t wait to welcome our neighbors into the store next month.”

The market will feature fresh meat, deli items and produce, a bakery, and Meijer and national brand items. It also will carry more than 2000 local products, including Cleveland Cold Brew Coffee, Micah’s Supreme Sauce, PUR Spices, Akron Honey, Lemon Waves and beauty care products from Catlin Naturals. It will also have a 54-seat cafe.

This Meijer’s fifth neighborhood market and the first outside of Michigan; the others are in Grand Rapids, Lansing, Royal Oak and Detroit. Meijer said it became the grocer partner of choice for the Cleveland project after neighborhood leaders visited one of its small-format stores and saw the positive impact it was having on its community.

Overall, the family-owned company operates 499 supercenters, Express locations and neighborhood markets in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
