London-based retailer would keep seven EMS stores in U.S. open

Outdoor gear/apparel retailer Mountain Warehouse (London) is seeking to buy Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS, Meridian, Conn.). Mountain Warehouse has emerged as the so-called “stalking horse bidder” (initial bidder) in EMS’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.

Mountain Warehouse bid involves continuing to operate seven of EMS’ 20-plus stores. The other EMS locations are closing, with inventory available at discounts.

As part of its Chapter 11 restructuring petition, filed on June 18, EMS hired Hilco Merchant Resources in a joint venture with Gordon Brothers to manage liquidation sales at select EMS locations and inventory-reduction events at others.

“This prospect with a company that shares our values and commitment to the outdoor community marks an exciting opportunity for Eastern Mountain Sports,” said EMS President Dave Barton. “EMS will continue to provide our customers with the best outdoor gear and experience while supporting our dedicated employees and local communities.”

Mountain Warehouse was established in 1997 by founder Mark Neale and now operates 380 stores across the globe, including nine in the U.S.

The companies did not disclose a timetable for closing the deal.
