NRF: Retail Employment Rises Slightly in April

Industry hires 9200 workers for spring

Retail industry employment grew last month by 9200 jobs, according to a report released by the National Retail Federation.

Most of the growth occurred in the online and non-store categories, as well as in seasonally-predictable retail categories, such as building materials and garden supplies. Conversely, hiring increases in clothing, sporting goods and department stores were marginal. In all, 209,700 retail jobs were added on a year-over-year basis (auto dealers, gas stations and restaurants not included), according to the NRF.

“Today's jobs report confirms that we are primed for a modest rebound in the second quarter and second half of the year,” said NRF chief economist Jack Kleinhenz.
