Petco Union Square

Project Scope: Creating a two-story, 25,000-square-foot pet care center and store at the historic Tammany Hall in New York’s Union Square was intended to embody a fully integrated, omnichannel pet health and wellness ecosystem for Petco (San Diego). Partnering with design firm Arcadis (Amsterdam), the Petco flagship features a grooming salon, full-service veterinary hospital and curated merchandise assortment to create a destination that feels “like visiting historic NYC landmarks and taking a stroll through one of the city’s many renowned public parks with your pet,” says Rick Neira, VP, Visual and Creative Merchandising, Petco.

Goals and Objectives:

  • Pay homage to the historic community that houses the store by incorporating details from local neighborhoods.
  • Use plants and greenery to honor Union Square Park.
  • Recreate an open-air farmer’s market inside a historic building.
  • Build the entry and lobby to adapt to various VM needs and product launches.
  • Convert the second floor to include a large companion animal area.
  • Use materials such as exposed bricks, herringbone wood floors and reclaimed fixtures.

Unique Store Concept: The flagship was designed to nurture the connection between pets and pet parents because, Neira says, “it was important to us that the experience we created made you want to spend time in the store, relax and create a space that celebrated the bond between pets and their pet parents.” It is a space unlike any other Petco location, according to Neira, with a fully integrated pet care ecosystem in one place.
