Supermarket giant adds Genuardi's 39 Mid-Atlantic stores

Safeway Inc. (Pleasanton, Calif.) has gotten bigger. The nation's third-largest grocery retail organization – and ninth-largest overall retailer – completed its acquisition of Genuardi's Family Markets, Inc. (Norristown, Pa.). Hank Mullany, Genuardi's executive vp and coo, has been named president of the new Genuardi's division of Safeway.

Genuardi's was a privately owned supermarket chain with 39 stores in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey, and annual sales of approximately $1 billion. Safeway, a Fortune 50 company, operates more than 1700 stores in the U.S. and Canada and has annualized sales of approximately $33 billion.
