Saks Fifth Avenue to Close San Fran Locale

Saks Fifth Avenue (New York) is planning to close its San Francisco location in Union Square this May 10, according to ABC7 News. The store opened there in 1981.

In July 2024, the store moved to an appointment-only model, following suit after similar changes were made to its Napa and Palo Alto locations.

Then, in late 2024, Saks Fifth Avenue acquired Neiman Marcus (Dallas) for $2.7 billion. The luxury retailer is planning to keep its Union Square Neiman Marcus location open.

Saks isn’t the first luxury retailer to exit San Francisco in recent years. Nordstrom (Seattle) closed its flagship there in 2023. Walgreens (Deerfield, Ill.), Michael Kors (New York) and Denny’s (Spartanburg, S.C.) have all recently shuttered their San Francisco locations, and Bloomingdale’s (New York) is now planning to close its location at the San Francisco Centre mall this spring.

Though some have left, others are opening shop, like Nintendo (Kyoto, Japan) with plans to open its second-ever U.S. location in Union Square.

In a statement, Saks Fifth Avenue told ABC7: “While we saw meaningful engagement and success through the appointment-only format, we have made this decision as part of our integration process as we focus on long-term growth. We look forward to serving the Bay Area community at Neiman Marcus San Francisco, Neiman Marcus Palo Alto, The Fifth Avenue Club Palo Alto, Saks.com and NeimanMarcus.com.”
