Saks Global Enterprises LLC (New York) announced it will close eight Saks Fifth Avenue stores and one bearing the Neiman Marcus flag, the latest of several steps the luxury retailer has taken since declaring Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month. The company described its latest moves as “the initial phase of optimization across the Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus store footprint.”

By doing that, “We will be better positioned to deliver exceptional products, elevated experiences and highly personalized service across all channels, while simultaneously positioning our company to make investments that enable long-term growth and value creation,” said Saks Global CEO Geoffroy van Raemdonck. “Importantly, opportunities within the luxury market remain strong, and Saks Global is primed to play a distinct, enduring role within the industry for many years to come.”

Saks Global also said its sole store bearing the Bergdorf Goodman brand (on New York’s Fifth Avenue) will continue operating as usual. In addition, the retailer said it is closing most of its standalone Fifth Avenue Club personal styling suites and will soon begin directing customers looking to shop with Horchow, Neiman Marcus’ online luxury home furnishing unit, to the home category on NeimanMarcus.com.

Earlier this month, Saks detailed plans to close most of its discount Saks OFF 5TH Stores, as part of its emphasis on full-price merchandising.
