Shoe Carnival Inc. (Fort Mill, S.C.) said CEO Mark Worden has left the retailer and that former CEO Cliff Sifford has been tapped as his interim replacement. The move comes as the retailer continues converting virtually all its 420-plus stores to the Shoe Station brand that it acquired in 2021.

The news release on the corner-office transition contained no information on why Worden had exited, though Lead Independent Director Charlie Tomm did say “we’re grateful for Mark’s many contributions throughout his career at Shoe Carnival and wish him all the best.”

Sifford, meantime, has been with the retailer since 1997, most recently serving as Vice Chairman of its board. Twice before that, he served stints as either CEO or President and CEO.

“As we look to the next chapter in Shoe Carnival’s transformation and growth, we’re excited to welcome Cliff back to the CEO role,” said Tomm. “The board believes that Cliff’s proven leadership, coupled with his years of experience with Shoe Carnival and his vast knowledge of the business, make him the right person to lead Shoe Carnival as we execute our strategic plan” of converting to the Shoe Station brand.
