Store Openings: Walmart Canada, Tractor Supply

Two high-profile retailers have unveiled growth plans for the near future:

Walmart Canada (Mississauga, Ont.) has announced plans to build dozens of new stores across the country, beginning with five new Supercentres in Ontario and Alberta by 2027. In addition, the Canadian unit of Bentonville, Ark.-based Walmart – which currently operates 400-plus stores in the country – will start operations at a new, state-of-the-art distribution center in Vaughan, Ont., this spring.

“Walmart Canada is on an ambitious growth journey to serve even more Canadians – better and differently than ever before. Our $6.5 billion [$4.5 billion U.S.] investment is the largest we’ve made in Canada towards expanding our footprint since we first arrived here 30 years ago,” said Gui Loureiro, Regional CEO, Walmart Canada, Chile, Mexico and Central America.

Tractor Supply Co. (Brentwood, Tenn.) said it plans to open 90 new stores in the coming year, along with 10 new Petsense by Tractor Supply stores. The rural-lifestyle retailer disclosed that number in a news release detailing its financial results for its fiscal year 2024 ended Dec. 28. At that time, there were 2296 Tractor Supply stores in 49 states and 206 Petsense by Tractor Supply stores in 23 states.
