Non-Holiday Window Displays

LAST SUMMER, THE buzz around the Summer Olympics in Paris was palpable, and Macy’s decided to go for the gold with its on-theme displays.

These windows set the stage for nine different brands, all sporting an Olympic theme with dynamic mannequins and props. “Our brand collaboration was key to the installations,” says Andi Woung, Visual Merchandising Manager, Macy’s. “While the windows were designed to reflect a cohesive theme, brands were integral to the approval process as well as the merchandise direction.”

The mannequins featured special paint finishes and were designed for an illusion of motion – running or even flying through the air – and were complemented by super-thin, fin-shaped props that were edge-lit with faux neon. One challenge was the implementation of the forced perspectives in some of the windows, which were intended to add a sense of movement. This was especially difficult, Woung says, when it came to windows with shallow depths.

“The windows utilized a combination of gloss painted shapes and floors in contrast against the flat finish of the walls,” Woung says. “Inset LED strips and graphic stripes were added to complete the sense of movement and [amplify] the clean look of the windows.”
