Though its financial struggles continue, Target Corp. (Minneapolis) plans to continue growing its physical footprint by opening 43 new stores in 23 states, according to its website. In addition, new CEO Michael Fiddelke (he took the helm Feb.2, capping a two-decade career there) posted an open letter on the site outlining the company’s priorities in seeking to revive its fortunes.

“… While we have real work to do, we are clear on who we are, our unique place in retail and in the hearts of our guests,” Fiddelke writes. “We are equally clear on the opportunity in front of us. Our guests want great design, real value and experiences that delight. That’s where Target has always been at its best, and it’s what grounds the important work in front of us now.

“As we move forward, our strategy is focused on four priorities:

• Leading with merchandising authority by curating with conviction — bringing together design, style and value in a way only Target can.
• Elevating the guest experience by making every store visit and digital interaction easier, more inspiring and more welcoming.
• Accelerating technology to remove friction, enable our teams and create more personalized, joyful experiences for guests.
• Strengthening our team and communities by investing in our people, building future-ready skills and growing alongside the communities we serve.”

As for the store openings, they will all have either 128,000 or 148,000 square feet of space, except for the one in Binghamton, N.Y., which will have 90,000 square feet. (Specific dates for each opening were not provided by Target). The heaviest concentration of new stores will be in Florida (5), North Carolina (5) and Texas (4).
