Target Corp. (Minneapolis) will open 15 stores this year, including eight TargetExpress stores, one CityTarget and six general merchandise stores, according to the mass-merchant retailer. Smaller format stores, including CityTarget and TargetExpress, are geared toward growing urban markets.

In a company statement, Target’s executive vp and chief stores officer Tina Tyler said Target’s store growth “looks different today than it did five years ago.”

This year, the retailer will also bring layout changes to its traditional Target stores and more integration between digital and brick-and-mortar shopping experiences, said Tyler. Target says upcoming markets for TargetExpress will also include the Philadelphia and Los Angeles areas.

The first East Coast CityTarget will open in Boston this spring. CityTargets average 80,000 to 160,000 square feet. The Boston store joins eight CityTargets already operating in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Ore., and Chicago. A second East Coast CityTarget is scheduled to open in New York (Brooklyn) next year.
