“Now what?” That question is likely on the lips of retailers and other businesses reliant on imports, now that a federal appeals court has temporarily halted a ruling from a federal trade court that would have voided most of President Trump’s tariffs.

The first ruling came on Wednesday (May 28); the stay came the next day.

Where is this all leading? Likely to the U.S. Supreme Court. Said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt: “Ultimately, the Supreme Court must put an end to this for the sake of our Constitution and our country,” she said.

Meantime, in its coverage of the news, The Washington Post reported that the latest ruling “adds fresh uncertainty to the world of American importers and more than one dozen ongoing U.S. trade negotiations, including those with the European Union and China.”

Then there was this from The New York Times: “The latest development is unlikely to be the last twist in the tale,” Derren Nathan, head of equity research at the financial services company Hargreaves Lansdown wrote in a report on the tariff situation. “The world will be watching closely.”
