Following in the steps of other apparel retailers, Urban Outfitters (Philadelphia, Pa.) plans to launch an app-based marketplace for secondhand items, reports the Wall Street Journal.

“Our job is to grow,” said David Hayne, president of Nuuly and Chief Technology Officer for Urban Outfitters. “From a thrift standpoint, we know that if we don’t provide the platform it’s not going to keep sellers from selling on other platforms. These secondhand experiences are happening whether we’re playing in them or not.”

Nuuly Thrift will be available as an iPhone app this fall and will allow the retailer to collect commission on resold items. It’s estimated that 42 percent of Gen Z shoppers bought secondhand apparel items in 2020, according to GlobalData PLC.
