VMSD Announces Retailer of the Year

Macy’s Inc. named winner of magazine’s 2012 Peter Glen Retailer of the Year award

Macy’s Inc. is a leading example within the department store sector of a retailer that has adapted and evolved with its shoppers’ needs. In 2005, VMSD honored Federated Department Stores with its Retailer of the Year award for its focus on creating two national brands (Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s) and taking chances through its in-store initiatives. In 2012, Macy’s continues to drive change throughout the marketplace through its regional focus, expanded brand offerings and adoption of in-store technology. With this in mind, VMSD is honoring the department store chain again as its Retailer of the Year.

Peter Glen was a designer, consultant, industry critic, motivational speaker and VMSD columnist prior to his death in 2001. The award goes annually to the company that meets his demanding criteria for smart retailing, market awareness, innovation and an intuitive understanding of who its customers are and what they want, need and expect. Past winners of this award include Whole Foods (2011), Forever 21 (2010), Urban Outfitters (2009), Costco (2008), Best Buy (2007), Nordstrom (2006), Federated Department Stores (2005), Neiman Marcus (2004), Apple Computer (2003), Limited Brands (2002) and Target (2001).

VMSD will present the Retailer of the Year award to Macy’s during its International Retail Design Conference, September 5-7 at the Renaissance Chicago Downtown. Amy Hanson, Macy’s executive vp, property development and credit and customer service, will accept the award and share the brand’s story. For more information, visit irdconline.com.
