Locations in Florida, Arkansas, California and New Mexico will be affected

Walmart (Bentonville, Ark.) is planning to stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products in some of its stores, including locations in New Mexico, Florida, Arkansas and California.

According to The Wall Street Journal and Retail Dive, Walmart’s CEO Doug McMillon reportedly charged other Walmart execs to help find a solution in ceasing the sale of tobacco without “demanding the company do so.”

“…A result of our ongoing focus on the tobacco category, we have made the business decision to discontinue the sale of tobacco in select stores,” said a Walmart spokesperson in an emailed statement.

Other retailers in recent years have gone “tobacco-free,” including CVS in 2014 and Costco in 2016.

As of now, it is unclear how many stores will be affected presently or in the future.
