Walmart (Bentonville, Ark.) has opened its first ground-up Supercenter in four years, in Cypress, Texas. The store is also the first new-construction “Store of the Future” in the U.S., and part of Walmart’s plan to build or convert more than 150 stores in that format over the next several years.

“This store was built with the customer in mind,” John Furner, President and CEO, Walmart U.S. said in a news release. “It’s part of a larger transformation happening across our stores as we reimagine what shopping looks like for the future. It shows what’s possible when innovation meets intention.”

Along with a refreshed brand look and feel, the Cypress Supercenter offers a broader assortment across key categories and new ways to shop. For example, customers will see QR codes throughout the store that unlock digital tools, resources and instant access to an expanded merchandise assortment. The retailer says it “is blending the best of physical and digital to create a seamless omni journey — making shopping easy, fast and convenient.”

Highlights of the new store include:

• A pharmacy with a health services room and drive-thru.
• An updated vision center offering expanded services.
• Enhanced fashion, baby, home and pet departments.
• Regional and popular favorites such as a Hispanic bakery section, fresh tortilla maker, a sushi station and Dunkin’.
• Customer-centric amenities include a mother’s room and an auto care center.
• Store-wide digital shelf labels.
• Ability for customers to use the Walmart app to engage with the store, including scheduling TV mounting, enhancing registries or booking tire installation.
• A full range of pickup and delivery options — including curbside pickup, fast delivery (within 3 hours), express delivery (as soon as 30 minutes) and in-home.
• A full-service fuel station with 8 pumps serving up to 16 vehicles.

In addition to the Cypress locale, Walmart’s 2025 plans include opening new Supercenters in Frisco and Melissa, Texas; Eagle Mountain, Utah; and Eastvale, Calif. Smaller-scale Neighborhood Markets will debut in Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and Milton and Pace, Fla.; while stores in Mountain View, Calif., and East Windsor, N.J., will be converted to full Supercenters.

Overall, Walmart has 4600-plus stores in the U.S., and a total of 10,750 stores in 19 countries.
