Washington Marijuana Stores Slow to Open

State blames inexperienced license applicants for delays

Published

Washington state marijuana dispensaries are experiencing delay after delay, as new retail license applicants learn they cannot legally obtain funding outside the state, according to The Seattle Times.

State officials told the Times that nearly a quarter of applicants haven’t responded to requests for basic information from the Liquor Control Board, thereby nullifying their applications. Others requested more time to implement security systems or build stores.

However, some residents have become impatient with the state’s slow pace, compared to Colorado. Both states legalized cannabis dispensaries in the same month (November 2012), but Colorado has opened far more retail locations, the Times reports.
