Aldi Einkauf GmbH & Compagnie oHG (Essen, Germany), the international supermarket discount operator, said it plans to open more than 600 more stores in the U.S. over the next five years, seeking to become the country's biggest discount supermarket chain by store count.

Aldi already has nearly 1300 U.S. locations, mostly in the Midwest and East. According to The Wall Street Journal, the retailer will venture into new markets, such as Southern California

“We are ramping up expansion because there is growing demand for our stores,” Aldi US president Jason Hart told The Journal. The company's research shows that grocers at the high and low ends of the market have continued to grow while those in the middle have struggled.

Aldi is organized along two distinct operating units. One of the two owns the Trader Joe's grocery chain.
