Big Mac and a DVD, please

McDonald's Corp. (Oak Brook, Ill.) is installing 105 DVD vending machines in its Denver stores, after conducting test runs of the machines at several of its fast-food locations. According to Mats Lederhausen, managing director of McDonald's Ventures, the company expects the machines to increase foot traffic and lure more business.

ELO Media LLC (New York), a provider of DVMatic automated DVD rental machines, says such marketing opportunities are being sought after as a competitive edge to increase foot traffic at retail locations.

The company cites reports that show more than 80 percent of U.S. households will soon own DVD players. It predicts that by the end of 2005, more than 2000 DVD vending machines will be in operation in the U.S., in locations such as supermarkets, restaurants and shopping centers.

ELO recently installed DVMatics at Rutgers University and Monmouth University campuses. One machine can hold more than 700 DVDs slots and 180 different titles.
