The Retail Council of Canada has awarded its Excellence in Retailing Award, in Retail Store Design to fashion retailer Mendocino for its new flagship store in downtown Toronto. The store, in the city’s Yorkville shopping district, was designed by Toronto-based Perennial Inc.

“Mendocino is all about uncompromising, of-the-moment style combined with extraordinary customer service,” said Donna Lawson, Perennial’s director of environmental design. “Our goal was to use design to bring that brand promise, and Mendocino’s eclectic character, to life.”

By combining both modern and raw materials, and juxtaposing new against old, lead designer Nadia Cannataro was able to capture the nuances of the discriminating, fashion-savvy Mendocino brand. The flexible plan allows the retailer to refresh the look of the store weekly.

The annual awards go to retailers that create an innovative and visually enticing design and layout for their stores. Mendocino has 10 stores in the Toronto area.
