Dog Days of August

PETCO Animal Supplies Inc. (San Diego) will debut its new Millennium Design store prototype in four Minneapolis-area locations next week.

The design upgrade, including a brighter, more open, store and the retailer's increasingly popular pet bar, will be featured at stores in Richfield, Eden Prairie, Highland Park and Duluth, Minn.

The company says the design is based largely on customer input for an optimum shopping experience, and these four are just a part of the 14 total Minnesota stores that will receive this upgrade this year. Already, stores in Stillwater, Coon Rapids, Roseville, Brooklyn Park and West St. Paul have been remodeled to the Millennium design. By the end of the year, PETCO stores in Maplewood, Apple Valley, St. Cloud, Maple Grove and Fridley, Minn., will be converted to this new format. More than 50 PETCO stores nationwide will undergo this change during 2003.

PETCO is the nation's second-largest pet supply specialty retailer, trailing only PetSmart Inc. (Phoenix). It operates more than 635 neighborhood stores in 43 states and the District of Columbia.
