The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) announced its nominees for fashion designers of the year. The winners will be announced at the annual gala on June 7 at the New York Public Library.
First-timer Ralph Rucci joined Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera and Marc Jacobs as nominees for Women’s Wear Designer of the Year.
Sean Combs, Ralph Lauren and Kors are up for Men’s Wear Designer of the Year (the same three nominees as a year ago, when Kors won).
Nominees in accessories are Edmundo Castillo, Reed Krakoff for Coach and Jacobs (for his signature collection). Derek Lam, Zac Posen and Patrick Robinson for Perry Ellis are candidates for the Perry Ellis award for emerging designers.
Special honorees include Teri Agins of The Wall Street Journal, winner of the Eugenia Sheppard Award for excellence in covering the business of fashion; photographer Irving Penn for the Eleanor Lambert Award; Miuccia Prada, who will receive an International Award; and Donna Karan, who will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement award. Tom Ford, retiring designer for Gucci, will receive a special award “for the mark he has made as an American on international fashion,” and Sarah Jessica Parker, star of “Sex and the City” on HBO television, will be named the Fashion Icon. “No contest — she was a runaway,” said Stan Herman, the president of the council.
