First Saks Store Opens in Canada

Hudson’s Bay Co. (Toronto) opens its first Saks Fifth Avenue store in Canada today. Located in Toronto’s Eaton Centre next to a newly renovated Hudson’s Bay store, the Saks flagship is 169,000 square feet in size, spanning four floors.

The interior design of the space includes luxury features and furnishings such as hand-knotted Tibetan wool and silk area rugs, hand-painted Venetian plaster wall coverings and custom-made, hand-hammered copper chairs. An oversized sculpture sits the store’s main-floor atrium and hand-blown glass hangs from the ceiling on one of the upper floors.

According to the Toronto Star, Marc Metrick, president of Saks Fifth Avenue, explained that the purpose of the luxurious design was to define the Saks brand to its new audience. “It’s not just the products,” he said. “Saks is more than just things. Saks is a dream. Saks is a feeling.”
