“Shoes Walking on Flowers,” Timothy Fortuna's whimsical window display at the Stuart Weitzman store on Madison Avenue in New York, won top honors in this year's Lighting Services Inc/Gene Moore Awards contest.
Lighting Services Inc (LSI), the Stony Point, N.Y., designer and manufacturer of lighting equipment, created the awards program 12 years ago to recognize the artistry of those who produce display windows using LSI products. The competition is named in honor of Gene Moore, the longtime vp of display at Tiffany & Co. (New York).
Fortuna, president of his own New York design firm, was lauded by judges for creating “a perfect balance of color and merchandise, using intense and dramatic lighting to highlight the merchandise and the mosaic art shoes walking and floating over giant net flowers.” Fortuna used LSI's track-mounted 200 Series fixtures (PAR46) and 30 Series low-voltage spotlights (PAR46).
Fortuna, who receives a check for $2500, was one of 60 display designers who submitted entries for the Award, which is open to designers anywhere in the world who use LSI products to light their display.
“The award showcases the best in display window design and sets new benchmarks for the industry,” said Daniel Gelman, LSI president.
Second prize went to Robert Rufino, Tiffany's current vp, creative services, for “Summer Ice,” a dramatic underwater scene at the jeweler's New York flagship.
Two holiday displays tied for third-place honors: Saks Fifth Avenue's “Palatial Entry,” a celebration of the 300th anniversary of the founding of St. Petersburg, Russia, in its holiday windows at its New York flagship; and Shreve Crump & Low (Boston) for its “Wished on a Star” display at the jeweler's Boylston Street store.
