Founded by Stanley Marcus (of Neiman Marcus fame), the original Greenhouse in Dallas set a benchmark for day spa luxury. Last November, a luxurious three-story incarnation of The Greenhouse Spa at 127 E. 57th Street upped the ante. New York-based architect S. Russell Groves designed the new 6500-square-foot Greenhouse as a retreat from the city. At the entrance, a 300-square-foot retail area softly glows via backlit fabric scrims. Product is displayed on white-lacquered étageres set against wide plank oak flooring. At the mezzanine-level Skylight Cafe, a dramatic skylight is veiled to filter the daylight (and city architecture). The Greenhouse's 4500-square-foot upper floor is dedicated to treatment. Eight manicure/pedicure stations are equipped with flat-screen TVs and divided by full-height sliding oak partitions for privacy. Fifteen additional treatment rooms, including two “wet rooms,” are sheathed in variegated taupe mosaic tile.
