When BankUnited (Miami Lakes, Fla.) decided to enter the high-octane New York financial world with three commercial branches, higher ups determined that a strong physical presence would be critical to successful market integration. It challenged Gensler designers in New York to design a prototype that would create impact and stand out visually in the concrete canyons of midtown Manhattan.

Collaborating with the bank’s chief creative director, the Gensler team aimed for a design that would allow for adaptability to the different locations while projecting a consistent brand presence. The solution: a unifying and defining element dubbed “The Fold,” pictured here in the Sixth Avenue location.

Gensler developed the striking, sculptural piece with an eye toward flexibility and instant brand recognition. “The folding element can change based on the [store] layout; we think it’s a compelling design solution,” says John Bricker, creative director and principal, Gensler. “It also [serves] to abstractly connect the various functional spaces for the visitor in a physical way – almost like drawing a line from one space to another, folding from the conference/lounge area to the traditional teller line to the consultative areas.”

“We love that [the design varies] from location to location but there’s continuity from a brand perspective,” Bricker says. “It engages the customer every time but in a different way.”

The traditional buttoned-down bank with its hushed formality is transformed here to a collegial, inviting place to conduct business and even socialize. (The space accommodates networking events.) “Our work in retail, hospitality and experiential design all came together nicely for this prototype,” Bricker says. That’s evident in the whimsical fiberglass lamp fixtures that hang over the conference table, the cozy, clustered seating areas and warm European oak woodwork that was specially milled in New Hampshire for the project.

Lighting also plays an integral role in the design. Special attention was paid to highlighting The Fold and dramatically reflecting its angles with blue gel lamp covers. Pedestrians strolling past the bank at night are able to view the soaring display through expansive windows.

“In essence, the branch is a simple, beautifully executed box with well-appointed furnishings and folding forms,” Bricker says. “New Yorkers have taken notice.”
