HOW Design Live, May 4 – 8, 2015 in Chicago, Offers Leadership Wisdom for Creatives in Design, Branding and Marketing

NEW YORK (April 24, 2015) – HOW Design Live (@HOWbrand – #HOWLive), in partnership with Sterling Brands' President Debbie Millman — who has worked on the redesign of more than 200 global brands — is presenting a host of leadership-focused education sessions for creatives in design, branding and marketing. The conference program, called “HOW Leadership,” takes place at the 25th HOW Design Live, May 4 – 8 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. The conference and expo is the biggest, most inspiring, educational and talked-about design event anywhere in the world. Register at howdesignlive.com.

“We are so pleased to be presenting the HOW Leadership program in partnership with Debbie Millman, a writer, educator, artist, brand consultant and host of the popular radio show Design Matters,” says Gary Lynch, vice president/group publisher, design and publishing communities at F+W, A Content + eCommerce Company, the organizer of HOW. “All of the HOW Leadership presenters will help shape attendees' own personal leadership mantra. It doesn't even matter if you're trying to manage an entire company, team or just yourself, you'll discover the tools you need to fulfill your leadership goals.”

The HOW Leadership program, in partnership with Sterling Brands' Debbie Millman, features:

—“There Can Always Be a First Time” – Steve Frykholm, creative director of Herman Miller (@HermanMiller), will present lessons he's learned during his 45 years working at the company, where he's been largely responsible for the company's image and graphic identity.

—“Wanna Fika?” – Peter Borowski, head of design at Kraft Foods (@KraftFoods), will offer an inside scoop on how Gevalia, a dusty and forgotten mail-order product, became the star of the show on supermarket shelves and beyond.

—“What Seat? What Table?” – Randy J. Hunt (@randyjhunt), creative director at Etsy, in an honest and open presentation, will question the premise that designers should have a seat at the proverbial table. Then he'll share his positive experience being at one.

—“DesignInTech” – John Maeda (@johnmaeda), partner, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, will provide a data-driven examination of the intersection of design and technology, its implications and manifestations, providing insights and best practices on how to harness the power of both great design and powerful engineering.

—“Design in the Age of the Invisible Interface” – David Womack (@davidjwomack), executive creative director, mobile and Internet of things, at R/GA (@RGA), says we're moving from scenarios where we navigate interfaces to seek out information, to one where information seeks us out based on our personal data and context. This session will look at designing for this new landscape.

—“(Deep) Time Is on Your Side” – Rachel Sussman (@OLTW), artist, The Oldest Living Things in the World, asks: What can we learn from taking on long-term projects? In her session, Sussman talks about unlocking ourselves from a narrow view of time, so we can stretch our perspective, see things from new angles, and have a better understanding of the big picture.

—“Leading, Teaching and Inspiring the New Generation of Creative Nomads” – Petrula Vrontikis (@vrontikis), professor at the Art Center College of Design, will look at how economic and environmental changes are forcing Millennials to return to the adaptation methods of our nomadic ancestors. She says that to thrive, young individuals and organizations must embrace — and benefit from — the instability that arises from rapid change.

—“Making Systems and Creativity Work Together: Building Brands in the Modern Age” – Percolate Co-Founder Noah Brier (@heyitsnoah) – who's been named one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business by Fast Company and a Social Media Innovator by BusinessWeek – will share valuable insights in this enlightening session.

—“Women, Power, Money” – Cheryl Heller (@cherylheller), chair, MFA Design for Social Innovation at SVA, will present an approach to gender as a design problem, a recap of how far we've come on our way to equality, and some hard lessons learned over the years.

—“Idea Networks and Media Bosons: Finding + Harnessing Creativity” – Faris Yakob (@faris), co-founder of Genius Steals, says anyone can be “inspired” simply by knowing what ideas are and how to have them. In this session, Yakob will explore practical approaches to universal creativity, consider how to behave in a world of infinite utterances, and explain why media are bosons.

The HOW Leadership program is just one of five education programs, each with a specific focus. The other programs include: HOW Design – covering everything from working with clients to choosing type to staying creative on demand; The Dieline Package Design – packed with best practices and case studies from top brands; In-House Management – led by long-time in-house team managers; and Creative Business – offering expert guidance on running a successful business.
