Kmart, JCPenney Closing Stores

Both Sears Holding Corp. (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and JCPenney (Plano, Texas) have announced they will be closing a handful of stores early this year.

Sears is in the midst of closing a number of its Kmart stores, though it has not confirmed the total number of stores slated to close. According to the Los Angeles Times, four stores in California will close and others in Hawaii, Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota are also reportedly closing by mid-April.

JCPenney will shutter seven stores (mostly consisting of smaller-format stores) on or about April 8, reports The Dallas Morning News. The locations include one store each in California, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah and Wyoming. This is the fewest number of stores the retailer has closed in recent years; in 2015, it closed 41 stores, and 33 locations were closed in 2014.
