Kmart Plans Prototype

Kmart Corp. (Troy, Mich.) is working on a new prototype store design that it will begin testing this fall.

James Adamson, the bankrupt discount retailer's chairman and ceo, disclosed plans for the updated design in an interview with Women's Wear Daily. Adamson said Kmart will begin construction soon on the prototype in an existing store. The retailer plans to test market the first site and then transfer the best ideas from it to other stores in the chain.

The new Kmart design is expected to follow the lead of Target Stores, and feature bright lighting and wide, easy-to-shop aisles. Details of the new design, which Adamson hopes will help revive the retailer's financial fortunes, are to be unveiled in the next few weeks.
