Kohl’s Plans New Stores

Kohl’s (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) has plans to open smaller stores and outlets as a way to revive its business.

The retailer expects to open between five and 10 smaller-format stores, each of which will be about 35,000 square feet in size. The typical size of a Kohl’s store is 80,000 square feet. These smaller stores will be located in less populated areas, as well as in more dense, urban centers, and are slated to open next year.

The retailer also plans on adding two new outlet stores in 2016 that will likely sell clearance items and special orders, reports Fortune.

Finally, it also has plans to open 10 to 15 outlet mall stores under the Fila name, to which the company has exclusive U.S. rights. This will mark the first time the retailer will open a store that exclusively sells one of its private-label or exclusive brands.

These moves are part of the company’s three-year turnaround plan to add $2 billion in annual sales by the end of 2017.
