Designers at Callison Architecture Inc. (Seattle) extended the deeply rooted traditions of Freeport, Maine-based L.L. Bean, into its first store outside of Maine.
The two-level, 76,000-square-foot unit represents simple, functional design. A 30-by-50-foot glass facade provides sight lines throughout the upper floor, where outdoor sporting goods, men's and women's apparel and luggage can be found. The lower level is devoted to home goods and children's products.
A variety of flooring materials, including limestone, wood plank, cork, recycled rubber and carpet, differentiate departments and provide a wayfinding path. Furniture and fixtures made mostly of cherry and nickel-patina metal add a touch of warmth. The store's highlight is a 16-foot-high waterfall, which rises through a large opening in the floor of the upper level and flows into a live trout pool.
