Lord & Taylor Unveils 2013 Holiday Windows

Lord & Taylor unveiled this year’s holiday windows at its Fifth Avenue flagship in New York Wednesday night.

As reported in Women’s Wear Daily, this year’s windows are a tribute to the history of Manhattan. They follow a series of Lord & Taylor shoppers from different historical periods shopping, having tea and lunch, going to the opera.

“In each scene, there’s a little bit of Lord & Taylor history,” Roe Palermo, divisional vp of visual merchandising at the New York-based division of The Hudson’s Bay Co. Ltd. (Toronto).

The animated, mechanical windows are always one of the great holiday attractions in New York, with lines of consumers winding along Fifth Avenue and down 38th Street.

WWD reported that 55 Lord & Taylor employees worked on the windows for nine months. They’re created in a workshop underneath the Fifth Avenue sidewalk and then moved onto street level. The window sets, which are on hydraulics, weigh up to 2000 pounds.

The Lord & Taylor holiday windows, and those of other retailers – from New York to San Francisco, Dallas to Toronto – will be featured in VMSD’s annual roundup, in the February 2014 issue.
