Lowe’s (Mooresville, N.C.) is planning to open Petco (San Diego) shop-in-shops in some select stores throughout Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina, according to CNBC. Customers will be able to buy everyday pet goods like kitty litter and dog food; there will even be a vet on hand for appointments at some locations. The first concept is due to open in early February in San Antonio. The rest of the locations should debut by the end of March.
Lowe’s has begun offering merchandise beyond paint and other home improvement items in recent years. For example, it recently added categories like fitness equipment at some locations, as well as adding more home décor options to its website and some stores. The retailer already sells some pet supplies like beds.
The shop-in-shops will be roughly 1000 square feet but may vary in size by location. Staffed by one Lowe’s and one Petco employee, each concept will offer more than 700 items that can be purchased in store or scheduled for pick-up. Some will offer grooming services, microchipping and vaccination services for pets.
