Macy’s Renovation, Phase Two

Macy’s Inc. (Cincinnati) has announced the second phase of its $400 million renovation of the Herald Square flagship store in New York.

The retailer said it will revamp the main, mezzanine and second floors of the store, bridging both the Broadway and Seventh Avenue buildings, by this Christmas season.

The work will include redesigned cosmetics, accessories and menswear departments. And the reconfigured floor plan will make navigating between buildings easier and allow for upgrades of its departments and new vendor shops.

The retailer’s announcement said its windows along Seventh Avenue will showcase views into the store, and the mezzanine level will link the 34th and 35th street sides of the Broadway building.

There will also be a new visitor center on the mezzanine level and the Memorial Door entrance on 34th Street will be reopened.

The fragrance department will move to the 35th Street side of the Broadway building and a fragrance bar will be installed. Architectural changes for the cosmetics and fragrances departments include four new curved staircases and two new escalators leading to an expanded mezzanine level.

The men’s store in the Seventh Avenue building will be expanded. Dress furnishings, active wear, casual sportswear, traditional and contemporary collections will take over several floors within the store, with menswear eventually adding two extra floors by the end of the renovation project.

The first phase of the renovation, completed last year, included adding a shoe floor, a cafe on the second floor, a multi-level luxury brands section and a Coach shop designed by architect Rem Koolhaas. The company also raised ceilings to the store’s original height of 19 feet and remodeled the main Broadway and 35thStreet entrances with digital screen features. Windows on the mezzanine, second and sixth floors overlooking Broadway were reopened.

In March, Macy’s opened Stella 34 Trattoria, an Italian restaurant and bar on the sixth floor.
