Cincinnati-based Macy's Inc. is reducing the size of its store in downtown Pittsburgh, Pa., from nine floors of retail space to six. The work is planned to start next week and continue through October, reports the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
“The store is being reconfigured for better flow among departments, making shopping easier and more convenient,” Jim Sluzewski, senior vp, Macy’s, said in a statement. “In doing so, the merchandise assortment will continue to be tailored for the Downtown customer.”
The store will remain open during renovation and some of departments have already been moved to lower floors. Departments that now are on the eighth, ninth and 10th floors will be moved to lower levels, but the Premier Salon will remain on the 11th floor.
When completed, the remodeled store size will measure about 525,000 square feet. The 13-story Fifth Avenue building, which the retailer put on the market more than a year ago, was formerly a Kaufmann's department store and dates back to 1887.
