Marks & Spencer Group PLC (London) has appointed Marc Bolland, chief executive of supermarket group William Morrison Supermarkets, as its new ceo. Bolland will replace executive chairman Stuart Rose in early 2010, while Rose remains part-time chairman until July 2011 to ensure a smooth transition.

“M&S is one of the world’s great brands and I am very pleased to be given the opportunity to lead the company forward at this exciting stage,” says Bolland.

Bolland most recently served at the helm of Morrisons, the U.K.'s fourth-largest supermarket chain, focusing on turning the company around, remodeling stores and maintaining market share. Prior to that post, he was chief operating officer and executive board member at Dutch brewer Heineken.
