How did you get started in this field?
I was always aware of spatial relationships and knew that I wanted to do something creative with my hands. In high school, I was passionate about photography and fascinated with plastic shop class. But sketching, designing and planning were in line with my personality.
What’s the most exciting project you’ve worked on in the past year?
Detailing the lobbies and amenity spaces for Bellevue Towers, the luxury condos in Bellevue, Wash. This was shortly after the design of the Bellevue Towers Showroom, which showcased the condo units for sale.
What has been your biggest challenge as a designer?
Knowing in my gut that my design solution is the right one, but it won’t be selected because of some restraint on the project.
What’s your favorite trend happening in store design?
The green explosion. And I’m hopeful the movement sticks.
Least favorite?
Any technology that reminds me of “Big Brother.” Like the optical scanning technology in the movie “Minority Report.” The information gathered could be quite useful. But just because we look at something doesn’t necessarily validate its desirability.
What’s the best vacation you’ve ever been on?
A few years ago, in Paris, Amsterdam and Barcelona. I think that urban places appeal to me the most – a trip to the coast is relaxing, but a trip to Paris is invigorating to all the senses.
What song on your iPod would you be most embarrassed for the world to know?
I keep those password-protected. Okay, for your eyes only: “SexyBack” by Justin Timberlake.
Best advice you’ve ever received?
“Don’t eat that.”
Worst?
To sell my ’61 Ford Econoline pickup – it was a real gem. I don’t know how to fix cars, nor do I have much interest in restoration. Plus, I feel strongly about the environment. But that damn truck was pretty rare and had a lot of character.
It's March. Any St. Patrick’s tradition that you just aren’t in to?
I’ve never really understood the green beer thing, but my spring drink is a strong margarita.

Little-Known Facts…
• He played the violin for four years, the piano for two, and made the usual attempt to rock out in a high school garage band in Portland.
