Miss Jackson's has a history with shoppers in Tulsa, Okla., that dates back to 1910. The women's store, known for its fine apparel, accessories, cosmetics and gift collections, opened as a lingerie shop on the balcony of a jewelry store. In 1928, when a 27-story “skyscraper” opened in Tulsa, Miss Jackson's was the first tenant. In 1965, it moved to Utica Square.

(Westchester, Ill.) was charged with infusing the 34,700-square-foot store with a design that preserved the retailer's history, while updating it with a fresh style.

“In some ways we approached it as a historical renovation, with many hours devoted to interviews with staff, site observations and physical survey of site conditions.” says Charles Sparks, principal-in-charge. “We developed several scenarios for improvements but all were rooted in the importance of preserving and leveraging the store's legacy.”

The retailer's antique furniture, chandeliers and artwork were reconditioned and now mix with contemporary lighting, upholstered furniture, stone tile flooring, one-of-a-kind carpets and custom-designed area rugs. A unified color palette of neutral wall and trim colors creates a lighter and warmer store environment, while textured wallcoverings and mosaic wall tiles, accented with metallic stained sycamore and grit blast mirror, provide a modern touch.

During the renovation, new showcases were added in the first-floor cosmetics department, while on the second floor walls were removed to open up the designer apparel area.

“The new look is comfortably modern, but not too edgy,” says Sparks.
