Nike Inc. (Beaverton, Ore.) opened a 4500-square-foot Salvation store, a retail concept combining Nike, Converse and Hurley, in Malibu, Calif.
“We felt that there was a place in the action sports world for a different type of experience that was both innovative and celebrated the culture of art, design, music and action sports,” says Roger Wyett, president of Nike Affiliates. “Obviously, having three brands that we felt were very complementary together we thought was a good idea.”
The exterior façade contains a series of interlocking triangles made from marine-grade plywood. The store’s steel and glass door is shaped into diamonds. The interior design included plywood material, concrete floors and repurposed sails printed with black-and-white action sports imagery, including a surfing print of Hurley design director Ryan Hurley. Customers can also personalize products on iPads set into a counter in the store’s customization area.
The action sports business is projected to more than double to $1 billion in sales by 2015, according to a Women’s Wear Daily article. Nike operates two other Salvation locations in Laguna Beach, Calif., and Irvine, Calif.
