November Sales Drop at J.C.Penney

J. C.Penney Co. (Plano, Texas) reports its comparable store sales decreased 2.0 percent for the four-week period ended Nov. 26, 2011. This compares to a 9.2 percent increase in the same period last year. Total sales for the department store operator were down 5.9 percent in November.

The company noted that its decision to not to open early on Thanksgiving Day adversely impacted Black Friday sales and that sales remained soft in-store throughout the holiday weekend. Online traffic starting on Thanksgiving Day and continuing through Cyber Monday was up 12 percent to last year for the holiday weekend.
