El Palacio de Hierro (Mexico City), the Mexican luxury department store chain, will celebrate its 125th anniversary by turning its flagship store into a museum of more than a century of products including vintage fashion.
Women’s Wear Daily reported that the retailer is installing a 40-ton iron structure in the main hall of its downtown Centro store, designed by architect Héctor Esrawe, constructed like a 3-D grid that enables visitors to walk inside and view the different floors from different perspectives..
The exhibition opens October 9.
“We are showing old products in a modern way,” Rodrigo Flores, fashion home director for El Palacio and the project leader for the exhibition, told Women’s Wear. “We figured out that there would be no better way to stage an exhibition like this. It’s an important anniversary. We wanted to take it to another level.”
In addition, 18 of the store’s show windows will be adorned with a variety of products from the past of the retailer, whose name translates to “the Iron Palace” in English. The main attraction inside the store will occupy more than 4800 square feet over three levels, housing a total of 36 vignettes for fashion, furniture, memorabilia and historic pieces.
