Record Sales — Again — for Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (Bentonville, Ark.) reported record earnings and sales for the quarter ended July 31, 2003.

Total sales were $62.6 billion, an increase of 11.3 percent over the similar prior year quarter. Net income was up 14.7 percent.

Net sales for the six months ended July 31, 2003, were $119.4 billion, an increase of 10.5 percent over a year earlier.

For the quarter, Wal-Mart's store sales were up 10.2 percent and Sam's Club up 7.7 percent. For the six months, Wal-Mart stores were up 9.6 percent and Sam's up 7.5 percent. Internationally, sales were up 18.8 percent for the quarter, up 16.6 percent for the six months.

However, total same-store sales were up just 3.2 percent for the quarter, 3.1 percent for Wal-Mart stores and 3.6 percent comp increase for Sam's. For the six months, total company same-store sales were up 2.7 percent, a 2.7 percent increase for Wal-Mart stores and a 3 percent comp increase for Sam's.
