Retail Can Lead the Healing Process

Gene Silverberg, ceo of The Retail Group, Seattle-based strategic retail branding and design firm, told media that the U.S. economy will ultimately prevail producing on-target retail performance in the fourth quarter. “This is the time and decree for retailers to act as leaders,” he said.

“The retail world has an obligation and opportunity to strengthen America's healing and resolve,” said the executive of the industry's 25th-largest retail design firm (according to the VM+SD 2001 retail design firm survey). “During uncertain times, people look to familiar icons of confidence and trust. The American people will wipe their tears, blink their eyes and begin walking the high-road back, trying to separate themselves from the current national numbness.

“And though they will never forget the recent tragedy,” he insisted, “they will look to the more visible, tangible, comforting symbols of self-recovery to boost their spirits and reaffirm their commitment to life. This is the best time for retailers to reassess their market, brand, and environment. This is the time to be leaders and win customers'confidence with renewal, optimism, and solidarity.”
